2021 Vigan City Fiesta

The Philippines when it comes to festivals, there's no denying that it is extremely abundant. Every city, province and municipality have its own festivals and celebrate it annually.

Vigan City for one, has its very own set of festivals. Because of the city's rich culture, festivals are one way of preserving the traditions of the city. Every year, Vigan celebrates many different festivities including the Longganisa Festival, Binatbatan Festival, Kannawidan Festival, and most improtantly, the Vigan City Fiesta.

Annually, on the 25th of January, the Vigan City Fiesta is held in honour of St. Paul the Apostle, the city's patron saint. Locals and tourists gather to experience and watch the street dancing, parades, carnivals, food fairs, and the arts and crafts produced by the Bigueños. However, with our current condition, the fiesta is minimized to almost nothing, its main activities, the parades and steeet dancing couldn't be held due to the virus spreading. The carnivals and food fairs are no different. But most locals celebrated it within their homes with their family despite the pandemic.

During the City's fiesta this 2021, the city was still and silent as if it were just a normal day. Although the city authorities were just being cautious to prevent the virus from spreading, it's just sad to witness the supposed grand day of Vigan with nothing but stillness and quietness. In the near future, hopefully, the pandemic would be over so that we could return to live our normal lives without being restrained in our houses.

It was started in 1993 by the Save Vigan Ancestral Homes Association, Inc. (SVAHAI) to promote awareness of the value of the historic town, which was hoped to strengthen resolve to preserve and protect this heritage site. For the past sixteen years, the festival of arts has been successful in drumming up attention for Vigan’s ancestral houses. With the help of national and local agencies, as well as media, arts and non-governmental supporters, the festival has also succeeded in promoting other aspects of Vigan. Its popularity has even benefited the whole tourism industry of the northern region, bringing in tens of thousands of local and foreign tourists curious to explore and have a “northern experience.”             Viva Vigan’s week-long festivities have both religious and secular impo...
